Enlarged from a 6x7 negative in the HGB Leipzig darkroom on ORWO paper in 1986. The motif is part of the series “Stadt” (City, 1986-92) and was shown in its larger final format in my exhibitions at Jochen Hempel, Leipzig (2023) and Nagel Draxler, Berlin (2021). It is also part of the cassette “Foto-Anschlag” (Leipzig, 1988).
It shows the portal of the former Leipzig Artists’ House at Nikischplatz 2, a masterpiece of Art Nouveau, built in 1900 and destroyed in World War II in 1943. When I took this photo, however, I knew nothing about this; there was no indication of the place’s history. In 2013, the portal was renovated and the historic lettering was added. Man wird den einzelnen Bauteilen noch lange ihre Verpackung anmerken, man wird sie freilegen müssen durch Nutzung, freilegen von all dem anderen Verpackungsmüll im übertragenen Sinn, den Stillhaltefolien und Schonbezügen, Schutzschichten, die man nicht mehr als solche erkennen kann, vor allem nach einem so langen Baugeschehen. The individual component parts and the packaging will still be noticeable for some time; they will have to be unwrapped and exposed through use, unwrapped from all the other packaging rubbish, figuratively speaking, the protective film and the dust covers, protective layers no longer recognisable as such, especially after such a long construction phase.

Fotografien im Auftrag der Klassik Stiftung Weimar: Fundort und Aufbewahrungsort des Manuskripts von Faust II. Damals hatte es Goethe in einem Schrank seines Arbeitszimmers versteckt. Heute wird es im klimatisierten Magazin des Goethe- und Schiller-Archivs aufbewahrt. Photographs commissioned by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar: where the manuscript of Faust II was found and is now stored. At the time, Goethe had hidden it in a cupboard in his study. Today it is kept in the air-conditioned Goethe and Schiller Archive.

Focus on Photography - Recent Additions to the Collection

Under the title “Focus on Photography”, the MdbK will in future provide insights into the Photographic Collection at irregular intervals. It will begin with a selection of recent acquisitions, donations and permanent loans. Following the gradual establishment of photography as an equal form of expression in the visual arts from the end of the 1970s, the collection initially grew rather sporadically. In the last 20 years, however, it has been continuously expanded - not least thanks to the commitment of private and institutional sponsors.
The selected new additions were created in the last 60 years and come from eleven different photographers from three generations: Kerstin Flake (*1967), Erich-W. Hartzsch (*1952), Matthias Hoch (*1958), Jan Mammey (*1972), Klara Meinhardt (*1987), Falk Messerschmidt (*1982), Evelyn Richter (1930-2021), Ricarda Roggan (*1972), Erasmus Schröter (1956-2021), Andrzej Steinbach (*1983) and Marion Wenzel (*1958). Curated by Dr. Philipp Freytag, Curator Photography and Media Art at the MdbK Leipzig.
Almost all of the artists have a connection to the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts (HGB). In addition to social documentary positions, there are conceptual, often media-reflective approaches.Some image sequences are narrative, others are serial.Black and white photographs alternate with color photographs, and classic exposures stand alongside prints. There are also infrared photographs, a cyanotype as well as collages and overpaintings.The collection presentation thus unites a remarkable variety of photographic means of expression and at the same time offers a fragmentary overview of the recent history of photography in Leipzig.

Sechs Billboards mit Motiven aus der Serie »Silver Tower, Frankfurt am Main, 2009-11« sind als ortsspezifische fotografische Arbeit auf einer Freifläche zu sehen. Die Tafeln korrespondieren mit einem Pavillon, der ursprünglich in den 1970er Jahren von ABB und Otl Aicher im gleichen Corporate Design wie die Zentrale der Dresdner Bank entwickelt wurde und der jetzt von der nGbK als temporäres “Klassenzimmer der Zukunft” genutzt wird. Weitere Fotografien sind rund um die Uhr im Schaufenster der station urbaner kulturen als Slideshow und Leuchtkasten zu sehen.
Six billboards with motifs from the series »Silver Tower, Frankfurt am Main, 2009-11« are on view as a site-specific photographic work on a green area. The images correspond to a pavilion originally developed in the 1970s by ABB and Otl Aicher in the same corporate design as the Dresdner Bank headquarters. This summer, the modified pavilion has been used by the nGbK as a temporary »classroom of the future«. More photographs can be seen around the clock as a slideshow and lightbox in the shop windows of the station urbaner kulturen.
